Our load cells can be based either on resistive strain gauges or vibrating wire and also direct reading, and they can be in either solid format for direct load application or as centre hole format. In the latter format they are commonly used for measuring loads in soil or rock anchors. Solid cells are used for any direct loading such as the monitoring of hoop reinforcement in tunnels etc. We recommend that cells using vibrating wire sensors are used for long term monitoring of slopes, whereas resistive strain units are suitable for temporary works.

Vibrating Wire Centre hole Load Cell

These are constructed as a stainless steel cylinder which incorporates several vibrating wire strain gauges. This type of cell is particularly suitable for the long term measurement of anchor loads since there are no electronic devices which are liable to long term calibration changes. Additionally, the use of a multiplicity of strain gauges ensures that eccentric loading can be accommodated.

Hydraulic Gauge Centre Hole Load Cell

These units consist of two annular welded load bearing platens separated by a thin fluid filled chamber. Fluid pressure acts on a Bourdon gauge which is calibrated in Tonnes. Thes units can be temperature sensitive and they should be shielded from direct sunlight.

Resistive Gauge Load Cells.

These cells in either solid or centre hole format consist of resistive strain gauged hollow cylinders or cylindrical billets. They are tolerant of eccentric loading, but since they contain sensitive strin gauges, they should not be used for long term monitoring unless they are capable of being routinely checked for calibration. They are easy to data log, but since they output small analogue voltage signals, the calibration can be materially affected by long cable lengths and changes in cable resistance.
